Kızıl Yıldız: Sovyetler Birliği Tarihi (Red Star: The History of the Soviet Union) came out with Kronik Kitap in October 2025.
Together with Onur İşçi, we set out to write a history of the Soviet Union that reflected our experience teaching in Turkey over the past decade. In the classroom, both of us had found students inclined to think about the USSR as an exceptional and exceptionally ideological state. We had also found that, if comparisons were drawn, the frame of reference was overwhelmingly the United States.
In Kızıl Yıldız, we sought to tell the history of the Soviet Union from a perspective that interests us both, that of the international competition for economic development. Drawing on recent works that situate the Soviet Union in the history of global capitalism, we wrote about the Soviet Union's trajectory as that of a late-industrializing state. Where possible, we drew connections to Turkey's own twentieth-century history.
The book is an accessible survey, with each chapter organized around the life and works of a cultural figure - from poets and writers to ballerinas and rock stars.
